Rehoming Sucesses

Sophie the rabbit was successfully rehomed this week, we are really pleased that she has gone to a lovely couple who rehomed Henry the rabbit last year.

Other rehoming successes were 3 young rats who went to a lovely lady in Westhill and 4 rats who were rehomed in the City centre.

We have also managed to organise two homes down in Glasgow for another 4 rats.

PAWSS urgently need a Volunteer Coordinator, Fundraising Coordinator and Foster Carers.

Life sets us many challenges…..especially when we least expect it. At this time we face more new changes for PAWSS if it is to remain open as a charity.

Though we have a few volunteers involved, who do what they can when they have free time, PAWSS is in desperate need of foster carers for all small rodents; including gerbils, hamsters, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits.

Due to personal circumstances and existing animals in care, our main foster carers are no longer able to help as much as they have in the past. Often foster carers are left with a lot of older animals to provide permanent care to and this has left our main carers having to close their doors.

Until we have more carers PAWSS can't offer to take any small animals into care.

As Chairperson I mainly coordinate the volunteers, and oversee the running of PAWSS. Unfortunately, due to an ongoing health condition, I am no longer able to do as much as I previously did.

To keep PAWSS running at the same capacity, as it has done over the past couple of years, I am seeking a friendly person who is willing to coordinate the volunteers, assist in setting up new volunteers and help with arranging volunteers for fundraising duties.

Fundraising is another area of great need for our future and we would also be looking for a friendly ‘people person’ who can organise our fundraising activities.

With all these areas in need of help, until these voluntary positions are filled we are simply not able to run PAWSS to its usual capacity.

Another Day, Another Dollar

These days though the dollars (or should I say pounds) seem to be flowing in the wrong direction.

Everything is getting more expensive; electricity, gas, food, vet care etc etc, but we are very lucky in one respect...

Although the practical items do cost more these days our volunteers still charge nothing for their time, commitment and love that they give to their foster animals.

So thank you to all our foster carers and volunteers..... you ask for nothing for all the fantastic work you do for PAWSS and give the animals everything. We are indebted to you for all the hard work you put in to PAWSS.

Here's to the future and to better times ahead.

No rest for the wicked

What a busy old week.

2 emergencies (Brock, pictured, had just 3 days to find a home, thankfully a home came up in time), countless phone calls and some animals we simply had to say no to.

We are very lucky that Aberdeen has a few other rescues like Drumlassie, The New Arc, Willows and a few individuals who also do what they can; so when we have to say no we can at least give owners other options.

We hate turning any animal away but there is always a limit to how many rescue animals you can take on no matter how big or small an organisation you are. It has taken us years to recognise that limit and we still sometimes bend the rules ...... hearts and heads ...... hearts and heads......Sometimes your heart just wins ... no questions asked.

Driven by rats

Some of our volunteers have transport while other rely on buses and trains.

Today one of our volunteers and her husband are driving down to Stonehaven to meet a lovely lady who is driving up from Perth to collect 3 rats. Fortunately She has adpoted from us before so she has already been homechecked, which makes the process a lot easier.

In the past they have driven to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Ayr etc to find homes for rats and luckily other dedicated rat owners have driven from Fife, Dundee and Edinburgh to come and meet and adopt the rats.

Given the numbers we deal with, it's hard to imagine how many rats would still have been in care if we hadn't been able to travel to find them new homes.

Two chinchillas, Wicket & Wedge, came into care today. They are 3 years old and very nice chinchillas who have been well loved their whole life.

They have only come into care because their owner is moving abroad and sadly can't take them with her.

Both chinchillas love to get out and play every evening and are both very social chinnies who are friendly to everyone they meet.
